we use tempo team as our source of truth and had to write a complex script to automatically sync to Jira Groups and Atlassian Teams daily. Tempo Teams is the source as team leads in Tempo have the ability to maintain the membership and our custom script now eliminates the need for admins to manually maintain Jira membership
I agree with Karin on this subject: connecting Tempo teams and Atlassian teams would be interesting in more ways than one.
On the one hand, these two concepts bring ambiguity or even duplication in the system: do you really think that a team working with Atlassian tools is different from this team logging its work?
On the other hand, group management is currently done at the administration level, which in fact prevents their use at the team level in complete autonomy.

This is SOOOO important I can't fathom how is this not a feature already

It would be great!!!! Usually, roles and groups handle every permission (even log permissions in Jira projects).
